Product and Advantage:
It is important to Bright Kids Uganda to develop projects that will provide an income, ensure food security and teach the children. The Poultry Project is one example. The initial phase of the Poultry Project was completed in July 2011, providing Bright Kids Uganda with food and a steady income from eggs and broiler chickens sold to the local community. Now that the initial phase has been completed, Bright Kids Uganda hopes to expand the project by purchasing an additional 200 broiler chickens. Currently, the existing project generates an estimated annual income of US$8,475. With the expansion project, Bright Kids Uganda has the ability to generate an additional US$750 annually. In order to do this, the current housing structure must be expanded to accommodate the new chickens. To begin the Poultry Project, Bright Kids Uganda requires funds to purchase building materials and account for labor. The poultry project is an essential part of BKU’s mission to be sustainable by providing food, as well as income for purchasing additional food items, school supplies, other required materials for the children of Bright Kids Uganda, and general administrative functions of the organization. Also, the manure produced by the chickens is used to fertilize Bright Kids Uganda’s agricultural fields, which will increase yields. A supplementary benefit of the Poultry Project will provide the children with agricultural skills.
